Windmill Harbour

a sandy beach on the coastline

Perched on one of the northernmost corners of Hilton Head Island just off US 278, Windmill Harbour is one of the first communities you will pass when you drive onto the island. This proximity to transit shouldn’t fool anyone; Windmill Harbour is one of Hilton Head’s most private communities – it’s also one of its smaller communities.

Between Windmill Harbour’s open water access from nearby Skull Creek, Calibogue Sound, and the Atlantic, as well as its small size, many of its properties are waterfront or have a water view. And if water activities appeal to you, you’re in luck because residents in this community are serious about their yachting and boating. Most of its amenities focus on these activities, and today Windmill Harbour is home to the South Carolina Yacht Club, making it one of the best boating communities on Hilton Head Island.

Spanish Wells

As Windmill Harbour’s western neighbor, the semi-private but secluded Spanish Wells community borders part of the Cross Island Parkway and is a mere two miles from the Cross Island Bridge. As one of the smaller waterfront communities with 350 acres, Spanish Wells is known for its exclusivity – if you’re looking to book vacation rentals or score special package offers, you’ll be disappointed. But what it lacks with access to visitors, Spanish Wells makes up with its amenities.

Spanish Wells has something for every future resident, including a combined two miles of walking and jogging trails, four Har-Tru tennis courts – fully lit at night so your play can extend well into the evening – as well as a nine-hole Cobb golf course, and a practice facility. For more opportunities to socialize with other residents, you can head to the only waterfront clubhouse on Hilton Head Island and have Happy Hour under the cabana after stopping by the pro shop, eating at the on-site grille, or taking a dip in the swimming pool.

Indigo Run

Located south of Windmill Harbour and Spanish Wells, Indigo Run sits between Marshland and the Cross Island Parkway. Like the northern communities, Indigo Run enjoys more of a residential feel partially because it is past the touristy areas and the shopping centers. While not excluding renters like Spanish Wells, full-time residents make up the majority of this community’s demographic. This is because its secure, secluded feel is partnered with its quick access to the parkway and its numerous clubs, including The Golf Club and the Golden Bear Golf Club.

Families can expect to arrive at shops and dining establishments in minutes – and when they’re done, they know they can just as quickly come right back to the comforts of home far enough away from the seasonal crowd. This makes Indigo Run one of the most family-friendly beach communities on Hilton Head Island.

Some of the highlights include a 14,000-sq-foot clubhouse; a 25,000-sq-foot tee; the Arthur Hills 18-hole golf course; the Robert Cupp course; two lit tennis courts; an Olympic-sized swimming pool; on-site golf tournaments; a pro shop; a security system with 24-hour monitored access; close proximity to healthcare, schools, transit; and, of course, quick access to the Hilton Head Island community beach park. Long Cove Club

Another small, private beachfront community in Hilton Head, Long Cove Club is located south of mid-island and has quick access to amenities in the surrounding areas. With entrance to the private Broad Creek harbor and marina, residents of Long Cove Club get deep water access, which not every interior community has to offer.

Not to be outdone by its flashier neighbors on the other side of the island, the Long Cove Club course has been rated number one in the state by Gold Digest for over a decade as a world-class destination. If you’re looking for year-round beach communities on Hilton Head, Long Cove Club – or even its next-door community Yacht Cove, stuck between Long Cove and Shelter Cove – is the perfect place for you!
