In honor of the 50^th birthday of the Heritage Golf Tournament, everything is going Heritage plaid; even the iconic Harbour Town Lighthouse no longer has it familiar red and white stripes but is now plaid and white.  To accomplish this, the Heritage plaid pattern was printed on more than a half-mile of vertical and horizontal removable vinyl panels and pieced together to cover the red stripes.   Because the lighthouse is a stucco surface, and not smooth, the vinyl stripes were installed using a heat and roll process using a blow torch and a foam roller to allow the plaid vinyl to take on the texture of the lighthouse.  After about 30 hours of work to cover all sides of the lighthouse’s red stripes, four RBC Heritage 50 logos were also added.  The lighthouse will be dressed in Heritage plaid until the last week in April.

The lighthouse and the Heritage Golf Tournament go hand-in-hand.  It was not quite finished being built when the first tournament was held in 1969, but it’s skeletal form stood in the background on the 18^th hole.  There was also no plaid winner’s jacket when Arnold Palmer won the first Heritage Tournament in 1969.  In 1969, tournament officials wore yellow jackets and winners received a red jacket.  It was not until a few year later when organizers were inspired by the 1790 golf print of Sir William Innes playing in a tartan plaid jacket that Heritage Plaid was born.

There is an interesting fact that you may not be aware of, the Loggerhead sea turtle is the South Carolina state reptile. Loggerheads are also the most common sea turtle nester along the shores of SC and Hilton Head is no exception. The Loggerhead is currently an endangered species and the residents on Hilton Head take great care to protect them during their nesting season. During the nesting season the Discovery Museum on the island has a group that comes out daily around 5 am to look for nests and hatchings and stake around any nests they discover. The museum also offers turtle walks to educate locals and visitors alike about this amazing process and the importance of doing our part to keep the turtles safe.

Each turtle nest can have between 100-140 turtle eggs inside. The eggs incubate for 50-60 days. Loggerheads have large heads in relation to their body and have a brownish/yellowish skin color. Adults weigh between 250- 400 pounds and reach up to 4 feet long. Females begin to nest the beginning of May and the nesting season is typically over by the end of August. Females will emerge to nest at night and the hatchlings usually emerge from the nest at night too. They orient themselves towards the brightest horizon and in such it is imperative that residents and guests staying by the beach turn off all outside lights by 10 PM during the nesting season. The town of Hilton Head requires that any lights visible from the beach be turned off from 10pm to 6am from May 1^st through October 1^st. All windows facing the beach must be covered too.

In addition to keeping the lights off so as to not disorient the hatchlings, there are several other things we can do to help protect them too. There are thousands of turtles that die each year when they mistakenly eat trash so we must all pick up after ourselves and others. Do not leave your beach umbrellas, chairs or any other gear on the beach overnight. The nesting female turtles could get tangled in them and they could be impassable for the hatchlings. Also, if you dig holes in the sand or build a sand castle during the day, be sure to return the beach to its undisturbed state before you leave.  If you see a nest do not disturb it, observe from a distance only. If you see a dead or injured loggerhead turtle on Hilton Head please contact the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, they are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Shannon kicks off his 30^th season on Hilton Head Island with his family entertainment show starting Memorial Day weekend, then he will perform Mondays – Fridays through September 2, with two one-hour shows nightly, 6:30-7:30 pm and 8-9pm.  But this summer when you go to see Shannon Tanner’s show you will notice a few changes in the pavilion where Shannon performs.  The 25-year-old Pavilion is getting a “facelift”.

THE FUN HAS ALREADY STARTED ON THE HARBOUR

March 29^th was the start of Spring Music & Taste on the Harbour. This seasonal outdoor concert series is held at the Neptune Statue every Thursday evening from 6:00-9:00 pm through May 17th.  This fun event features top local bands, and featured Shelter Cove restaurants offer a variety of specially-priced appetizers, wine, beer and cocktails. Seating is limited so you may want to bring your own chair, but you are encouraged to get up and dance the night away with us!

When Music & Taste on the Harbour concludes, the Summer fun of HarbourFest begins with Shannon Tanner’s Memorial Day Weekend concerts.  This weekly celebration every Monday-Friday with Shannon’s live music, entertainment from Cappy the Clown and kid’s arts and crafts is highlighted every Tuesday night with the spectacular Shelter Cove Fireworks show that lights up the summer nighttime skies.  Now in it’s 28^th year, this family-friendly event has been enjoyed by thousands of visitors.  Don’t miss seeing it this year.  Here is the schedule for the 2018 fireworks shows:
