Did you know our beautiful Hilton Head Island was voted  #1?  The 2017 World Best Awards by Travel and Leisure Magazine voted Hilton Head Island the #1 island in the continental United States and #2 island worldwide.  We are so lucky to live in a place that has beautiful weather, schools, churches, supermarkets, a hospital, live theatre, a symphony orchestra, bike trails, boating, golf and tennis and miles of beach for swimming, surfing, and sunning. We also have some of the finest restaurants in the south.  The island is only 12 miles long and 5 miles wide and the cross island parkway makes it easy to get anywhere you want to go in a matter of minutes.  We even have a small airport and it’s only 45 minutes to Savannah airport.

The other day I had

Considering Hilton Head Island is the furthest southernmost point in South Carolina accessible by car (give or take a few feet) one would think that the Georgia state line is not far away and they would be correct. Actually, the state line is only 5.15 miles off of South Beach in Sea Pines by water. By car, you are looking at approximately a 30-mile drive and about 45 minutes of driving time which is perfect for a day trip to take in the historic sites of Savannah. You can also travel to between Savannah and Hilton Head Island by boat!

Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and was founded in 1733 by General James Edward Oglethorpe.  The design of the city began with 4 “squares” which are open space and the squares were surrounded by residential

Hilton Head Island_beach renourishment_marine ife_hurricane matthew_hurricane irma_real estate_beachfront properties_Marybeth Buonaiuto_Dunes Real Estate

We are truly blessed to live in such a beautiful and tropical paradise that we call home.  Hilton Head Island, an approximate 13 by 6-mile Barrier Island is located off the East Coast of South Carolina just above the Georgia border.  And while visiting and living here are wonderful lifestyles, we have great concerns for our beaches.

Hilton Head has been doing beach renourishment for over 3 decades. This renourishment is done with large pipes and dredges.  It is the process of pumping sand from elsewhere onto a shoreline that is eroding due to waves and weather.

Beach erosion is a problem that any coastal community deals with and is a natural response to storm activity.   Renourishing the beaches is done to widen the existing beach. This process

In the wake of a combination of natural disasters, attention to safety, equal opportunity, health care needs, 21st-century education, affordable housing, environmental awareness and lots more, most citizens feel urged to take action of some sort.  It is during these times that we recognize our strength is in the power of our community and the community’s greatest resources are its people and each person’s unique gifts and skills.

With this in mind, I am beginning a video blog series on the organizations and people in the Lowcountry who are sharing their gifts, skills, time and care to address the needs of our fellow citizens and our area. I am very excited about this series as I know I will meet some amazing folks in Bluffton, Hilton Head Island,

Hilton Head Buoy 8_Hurricane Irma_South Forest Beach_Paul Daniels_Dunes Real Estate

No trip to Hilton Head Island in the coming weeks will be complete without going to South Forest Beach to see the island’s newest “tourist attraction” that appeared on the beach during the storm surge from Hurricane Irma on September 11th.  We are talking about “Coast Guard Buoy 8”, which was formerly marking the Port Royal Sound Channel several miles from Hilton Head Island but was dislodged by the power of the storm and came to rest on South Forest Beach adjacent to Shorewood Villas on South Forest Beach Drive.

This “Behemoth” is over 20 feet tall and weighs about 13,000 pounds, so it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.  Once the Coast Guard was notified of the buoy’s whereabouts, they visited Hilton Head Island and removed the signal light and

Fall Activites_Hilton Head_Dunes Real Estate_Restaurants

Fall on Hilton Head Island is a wonderful, laid-back time of year since school has started and our summer visitors have gone home until next year.  Also gone is the humidity; the weather is beautiful, and it is the perfect time of year to enjoy the beach.  Restaurants are not as crowded and the traffic is not as bad.

Fall brings a lot of fun activities to the Island. Here are just a few suggestions of “not to be missed” things to do if you are here in the Fall:

Although we don’t have a lot of Fall color like our friends in the North, The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is providing us with “color” this Fall as it opens its new 2017/18 season with The Color Purple which runs from October 4-22.  This award-winning production is the tale of 40
